At this festive event you will hear from our Keynote Speaker Dr. Ed Jackson Jr, Executive Architect Martin Luther King Jr Monument, Washington DC as he discusses his book: “The King Memorial”
We the Design Program Committee believed a national memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., should be based upon a strong and compelling construct. This imperative led us to conduct an international design competition in the hope of finding the very best of ideas to represent the legacy of Dr. King. Our challenge in the beginning was to define and frame the scope of the memorial. Should it be about Dr. King or should it be about the Civil Rights Movement and his role and contributions in it. The goal of this memorial (we concluded) should be a living memorial, not a monument to an American hero of the past or a monument to a particular event e.g., the Civil Rights Movement. Instead, the committee felt this memorial should provide the opportunity to share Dr. King’s passion, conviction, and commitment to America, and the “American Dream.” I am referring here to America as both a self-governing nation and a country of laws that insure justice, freedom, and liberty for all citizens regardless of their religion, ethnicity, gender, or country of birth. “America is not just a country, America is an idea” said Mr. Paul David Hewson (aka Bono). An idea that has attracted millions of immigrants to our shores in search of freedom and opportunity.
